Aalen Police Check Cyclist Visibility: One in Ten Fails Lighting Test
In a bid to enhance road safety during the dark season, Aalen Police Headquarters and Ostalbkreis District Office recently conducted a lighting and visibility check on cyclists. The operation, held on the last Monday of November 2024, targeted around one hundred cyclists in the Garden Street area.
The check, carried out in accordance with paragraph 67 of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO), revealed that while the majority of cyclists were equipped with the prescribed lighting - including a white front light, a red rear light, reflectors, cat's eyes, and reflective pedals - about one in ten had defects in their lighting. Those found without appropriate lighting face a fine of 20 euros, with the penalty increasing to 35 euros in the event of an accident due to lack of lighting.
In response to these findings, the police and local administration distributed situational warning vests, scarves, and StVZO-compliant lighting sets to remedy immediate deficiencies. They also provided instructions for eliminating lighting defects and recommended further measures for improved visibility and road safety. These included wearing bright or reflective clothing, using additional reflective elements, and wearing a bicycle helmet. The latter was found to be particularly lacking, with about half of those inspected not wearing one. The organization ADFC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club) in Aalen has also been advocating for better bike lane markings, increased lighting, and traffic-calming zones to further enhance cyclist safety.
The authorities appeal to all road users to drive carefully and foresightedly during the dark season. This includes checking their lighting and only using the roads with a roadworthy and fully lit bicycle at dusk or in the dark. By adhering to these guidelines, cyclists can significantly reduce their risk of accidents and ensure a safer commute for all.
