In a significant move, Germany's Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer, a member of the Christian Social Union (CSU) party, has announced changes to the food served at official events of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture. The new policy emphasizes promoting plant-based and protein-diversified options alongside traditional animal-based foods [1].

Rainer's announcement, made in the "Bild" newspaper, departs from the regulation introduced by his predecessor Cem Özdemir, which required all food to be vegetarian and sourced from organic farming, with exceptions for specific occasions [2]. Under Rainer's tenure, both vegetarian products and meat and fish will be served at future events [1].

Rainer's stance on dietary preferences is one of acceptance and understanding. He stated that he respects individuals who choose to eat vegetarian or vegan diets. However, he does not intend to initiate a "culture war" regarding food choices, whether on plates or in refrigerators [1].

The changes align with recommendations from the Scientific Advisory Board on Agricultural Policy, Nutrition and Consumer Health (WBAE), which advises the ministry and has called for national leadership on protein diversification to foster environmental and health benefits [1][2]. This shift towards more sustainable food choices reflects a commitment to sustainability, health, and economic innovation in food systems.

Minister Rainer also emphasized the importance of food being fresh and tasty, without condemning the meat-heavy eating habits of his party chairman, Markus Söder [1]. Instead, he stated that ideally, the food should be regional [1].

These changes mark a step towards a more inclusive and sustainable approach to food at official events, with a clear openness to innovative protein sources as part of Germany's broader food and agricultural policy aiming at sustainability and dietary shifts [1][2].
