Alcohol-Related Traffic Accidents High Risk on Ascension Day

Germany faces one of the most accident-prone days of the year at the end of May: Ascension Day, notorious for its high number of alcohol-related road accidents. According to official accident statistics, in 2022 alone, there were 287 such incidents on this day, making it the most dangerous in terms of alcohol-related road accidents. The number of alcohol-related traffic accidents averages around 95 per day in Germany throughout the year, illustrating the stark increase on Ascension Day.

Multiple factors contribute to the rising number of accidents on this public holiday. Weather conditions play a significant role in the accident pattern. For instance, in 2023, authorities recorded 340 alcohol-related road accidents involving at least one intoxicated road user on Ascension Day. The weather, recorded as "widespread dry and particularly sunny in the west," seemed to exacerbate the situation.

Fani Zaneta, a traffic safety expert at TÜV Association, emphasizes the underestimation of alcohol's dangers in road traffic. The increased risk on weekends and public holidays is due to social drinking, the combination of which and overestimation of one's abilities is dangerous in traffic. New Year's Day and May Day also see consistently above-average numbers of alcohol-related accidents.

Looking ahead to this year, meteorologists predict pleasant temperatures of 17 to 24 degrees for Ascension Day. However, the weather forecast has since turned out to be friendlier and drier than initially calculated, with cloudy conditions in the northwest and scattered rain in the afternoon. In Bavaria, there could still be frequent showers, but it's expected to be friendlier and often dry towards the Baltic Sea.

Ascension Day also poses a danger off the roads, particularly with early summer temperatures. Impulsive jumps into rivers, swimming pools, or gravel pits could quickly endanger revelers or even intoxicated individuals, contributing to the acute risk of drowning. Last year saw 411 fatal accidents in German waters, a significant increase from the previous year.

In light of these statistics, it's crucial for both drivers and water enthusiasts to exercise caution during the festive season, ensuring a safe and enjoyable Ascension Day for all.
