Assisting and Empowering Family Units
Last Thursday, the city of Landshut and the district youth office hosted a significant networking event. The goal of this gathering was to bridge the gap between youth welfare and integration assistance, with a particular focus on families with children with disabilities.
The event, organised by Janine Brabender and Katharina Hellmann, took place at the district youth office and brought together the city's disability commissioner and specialists from various organisations. The Supplementary Independent Participation Counseling (EUTB) of the Bavarian Red Cross Open Disability Work (OBA BRK) and Lebenshilfe Landshut were among the attendees. The Pilgerhaus Weinheim, offering support and inclusion services, and several Caritas centers across Germany, providing family, youth, and disability counseling, were also in attendance. Family education institutions such as family education centers and parent schools in Lübeck, specialising in support for families with special needs and disabilities, were also represented.
The networking event served as a kick-off for regular networking, with further meetings already being planned. All participants agreed that close cooperation and collaboration are necessary to improve offers, strengthen networks, and develop tailored assistance.
The 2022 study by the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs revealed that parents of children with disabilities experience high psychological stress. This underscores the importance of providing comprehensive support for affected individuals, which requires a significant amount of time.
Counseling centres can provide relief by guiding individuals through the complex support system and assisting with service applications. By utilising synergies in cooperation, the organisations involved aim to improve collaboration and exchange among counseling centres for families and young people with disabilities.
The event was a promising step towards a more collaborative approach to supporting families and young people with disabilities, and further meetings are eagerly anticipated.
