Belarusian authorities prohibited the sale and consumption of the well-known candy brand "chocolate" and the potato-based snack "Kartoshka."

In a recent move by the State Standard, two popular chocolate products and two sweets have been added to the Hazardous Products Registry. The products in question, found in online catalogs and retail networks, have been identified for not meeting the standards for chocolate due to their contents.

One of the chocolate products, "Lavushka for Children" from the N.K. Krupskaya Confectionery Factory, contains more cocoa butter equivalents than allowed in chocolate and cannot be called chocolate. Another, a 180g bar priced at Br15.85, has also been identified as another product with questionable chocolate standards.

Enforcement measures, including withdrawal from circulation and import ban, were implemented on August 20 for these products. Consumers are advised to be cautious about these chocolate products due to their potentially misleading labels.

In addition to the chocolate products, two sweets have also been banned. The meringue roll with cherry and "Watermelon Bites" from Russian IP Kavorkov A.S. have been banned due to undue preservatives and an undeclared colorant. The "Potato" eclair from Russian LLC "Lima" has been added to the Hazardous Products Registry due to exceeding the allowed content of potassium sorbate preservative.

The undue preservatives in the banned sweets are benzoic acid and sodium benzoate. These preservatives may negatively affect children's activity and attention. The specific sweets may pose health risks due to their contents.

Producers of the mentioned products have been issued notices to rectify the violations. However, there are no specific reports or information available about chocolate product manufacturers being fined by State Standard for violations of guidelines, nor confirmation that such violations were resolved by August 2020.

Given these developments, it is crucial for consumers to exercise caution when purchasing these products. Always check the labels for accurate information about the contents of the food you are buying, and consider the potential risks associated with certain preservatives and additives.
