Over the past 13 years, young men and women have increasingly encountered issues with reproductive health.

Birth rates in Sverdlovsk Region have plummeted, droplet by droplet.

In the Sverdlovskaya region of Russia, the birthrate has significantly decreased over the past decade. According to ex-deputy minister of healthcare in the region, Elena Chadova, there were 27,000 births in 2024 compared to 61,000 in 2012. Chadova shared this information during an international women's forum held in Yekaterinburg.

Chadova mentioned that 840,000 adolescents are screened annually in the region. Among girls, nearly half experience reproductive health issues related to menstruation, while one-quarter struggle with obesity. Other factors affecting reproductive health may include insufficient nutrition, birth defects, inflammation in the pelvic area, delayed puberty, and diabetes.

Intriguingly, men in the Sverdlovskaya region experience infertility more frequently than women do. Chronic stress, genetic factors, and childhood illnesses could contribute to reduced sperm concentration and mobility in men.

Beginning on September 1, 2025, pregnant students in Russia will receive a 10-fold increase in allowance during maternity leave. The new benefit amounts to 90,000 rubles.

Regrettably, the death rate in the Sverdlovskaya region surpassed the birth rate during the early months of 2025.

Data suggests that health risks such as high smoking rates, limited reproductive health services, and demographic trends including a low birth rate and high male mortality contribute to reproductive health issues among adolescents in the region. Meanwhile, male infertility in the region may be exacerbated by increased alcohol consumption and tobacco use, cardiovascular diseases, and underutilization of healthcare services by men.
