Café of Data: Three Reliable French SSH and Official Statistical Data Sources

On April 28, 2023, the French Center for Social Political Data (CDSP) is organizing an online webinar in collaboration with the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE). This event aims to introduce key data sources for social sciences research in France.

The webinar, scheduled for 13:00 CEST, will last for one hour and is open to students, researchers, and data scientists. The event will be accessible online, and the Zoom link will be sent via email on April 28, at the latest by 11:00 CET.

The webinar will begin with an introduction to major French social sciences data sources. Key official statistics and survey data available to researchers will be presented, including population censuses, labor market surveys, and household income data.

Following this, CASD will explain the data access framework, highlighting procedures for requesting and using the data in compliance with data protection regulations. The webinar will also include discussions on the type of variables available, sample sizes, and the potential for longitudinal or cross-sectional studies using the data.

Participants will receive guidance on navigating databases, using microdata, and understanding metadata for effective research application. A practical demonstration will be provided, offering insights into the use of these data sources.

An interactive Q&A session will allow participants to ask questions about data access, specific datasets, or technical issues. The Banque de données of the CDSP, ProgramProgedo's data repository, and the CASD will all be topics in the webinar.

The new Second National Plan for Open Science emphasizes the sharing and reuse of data, and this webinar aligns with these objectives. The webinar will present three trusted French social sciences & official statistics data sources that are available for research or teaching.

The event aims at facilitating researchers' awareness and utilization of French official and social science data, ultimately promoting high-quality, data-driven social research in France. Lucie Marie from CDSP, Frédérique Gros from Progedo, and Halima Bakia from CASD will all be speakers at the webinar.

This webinar is part of the ongoing efforts by INSEE and CASD to introduce and explain key data sources for social sciences research in France. If you are looking for exact program materials or recordings, I recommend checking directly with INSEE or CASD's official websites or contacting their support teams.

The webinar will delve into the realm of advanced data sources, discussing the potential for fitness-and-exercise, health-and-wellness, mental-health, nutrition, and technology-related data within social sciences research. The session will also cover data-and-cloud-computing principles, providing valuable insights for researchers and data scientists. Furthermore, the panel will explore the significance of data-driven research in fields like science and how it can contribute to improvement in overall student and professional learning.
