Charlize Theron cutting back on action scenes due to safety concerns

In the world of action cinema, few stars have pushed themselves to the limits quite like Charlize Theron and Uma Thurman. Both actresses have built their careers on grit, determination, and a willingness to endure physical pain for the sake of their art. However, their action-packed roles have come at a cost, as both have suffered significant injuries throughout their careers.

During a joint interview, Theron reflected on the toll her action-packed roles have taken on her body. One of her most memorable injuries occurred during the filming of *Æon Flux* in 2005, where she landed on her neck on a concrete bridge during a back handspring, resulting in a herniated disc that required surgery and a month-long neck brace.

In *The Old Guard* (2020), Theron tore a thumb ligament when her thumb caught in another actor's jacket during a fight scene. The injury required three operations and six months in a thumb brace. Despite these setbacks, Theron performed almost all her own stunts in the underrated action movie *Atomic Blonde* (2017), where she broke teeth from clenching her jaw during intense action scenes, necessitating dental surgery including donor bone graft and metal screw implants.

Theron has also experienced non-action related injuries, such as a herniated disk in her lower back while filming *Tully* and a head injury after knocking her head against a bench on the set of *Long Shot*.

Uma Thurman's injuries are less documented but are well-known from her physically demanding role in *Kill Bill*. The role involved extensive stunt work, and after *Kill Bill*, Thurman took a break from action films, implying that the physical toll and injuries sustained influenced that decision.

Theron, who has undergone surgery on both elbows, her right shoulder, and her thumb, is no longer eager to perform high-risk stunts. She shared that people often ask about her injuries, citing an example where they asked about her arm after surgery. Theron believes that stunt performers are integral to character building in films and supports the recognition of stunt performers, particularly in the Oscars' upcoming Achievement in Stunt Design category in 2027.

Like Theron, Thurman is cautious about taking on roles with demanding physical work, especially underwater scenes. Thurman's return to action films with *The Old Guard 2* after more than two decades shows that even after years of injuries, both Theron and Thurman remain committed to pushing the boundaries of action cinema.

Theron, now in her 40s, has endured significant damage from doing stunts throughout her career. However, her adult woman brain, as she puts it, is resistant to risky physical work. Theron's last surgery on her neck was 18 years ago, a testament to her resilience and determination. Despite the injuries, both Theron and Thurman continue to captivate audiences with their action-packed performances.
