Cincinnati Reds & UC Team Up for April Platelet Donations
Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati, and the Cincinnati Reds are teaming up to incentivize platelet donations this April. Platelets, crucial for preventing excessive bleeding in various medical scenarios, have a short shelf life and are in high demand locally.
The center needs at least 50 platelet donors daily to meet hospital requirements. Donating typically takes around 90 minutes and donors can give every two weeks. In appreciation, all April donors receive an exclusive Cincinnati Reds hat. Those who donate platelets also receive a ticket for themselves and a guest, free parking, a chance to throw out the first pitch, special recognition, and a visit from the Reds mascot(s).
The Pitching for Platelets experience offers VIP experiences to donors who give three or more times from April 1 to May 31. Platelets are separated from red cells and plasma during donation, allowing donors to give every 14 days. With a shelf life of 5-7 days, platelets are transfused almost immediately after donation.
Hoxworth Blood Center, with the help of University of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Reds, is encouraging platelet donations this April. With generous rewards and a critical need for these blood components, the center urges eligible donors to contribute and help save lives.
