Counterfeit merchandise faced aggressive action, as declared by Hưng Yên
Hung Yen, a key entry point to Hanoi and a major northern trade route hub, has emerged as a frequent target for smugglers and counterfeiters. To tackle this issue, Hung Yen authorities have pledged to combat trade fraud and counterfeit goods relentlessly.
Since the start of 2025, Hung Yen has investigated and addressed 453 violations, including 43 cases involving banned goods, 389 related to trade fraud, and 10 criminal prosecutions targeting counterfeit production. Enforcement authorities have demonstrated unwavering commitment in the fight against the production or trade of counterfeit goods, with zero tolerance for violations and severe punishment for offenders.
In an effort to bolster market oversight and monitoring, Hung Yen Province is leveraging e-commerce platforms and digital tools. Collaborations with businesses help verify product origins and ensure authenticity. Police are partnering with major online platforms to swiftly detect and remove fraudulent listings.
E-commerce platforms and social media have become hotbeds for counterfeit products due to enticing ads, false claims, and convenient online payments. To address this, Bùi Quý Khảnh, Deputy Head of the provincial market surveillance sub-department, has established specialized e-commerce monitoring teams.
One notable success in this fight was the seizure of over 1,000 tonnes of counterfeit and smuggled vegetable oil nationwide by the police, in collaboration with Nhât Minh Food Co., Ltd. This operation dismantled a smuggling ring moving over one million litres of counterfeit vegetable oil. Just weeks earlier, six prosecutions under food fraud charges were made.
In August 2025, Hung Yen police discovered hundreds of bags of fake animal feed and counterfeit stamps during a warehouse raid. On August 29, 380 bags of fake branded cat food and over 1.6 tonnes of raw materials were seized in Nghia Tru Commune.
To further strengthen its efforts, Hung Yen Province plans to launch a dedicated e-commerce platform connecting authorities, businesses, and consumers. This digital initiative aims to create a robust foundation for preventing trade fraud, protecting legitimate businesses, and instilling consumer confidence in a transparent and reliable marketplace.
Consumers are being educated on how to spot fake products and encouraged to report suspicious goods. More than VND 27.6 billion (over US$1 million) has been collected in fines and payments for the State budget. Between 2024 and 2025, Hung Yen secured over 800 commitments from businesses and operators pledging not to sell counterfeit or unverified products.
With this comprehensive approach, Hung Yen is making significant headway in the fight against counterfeit goods, which range from food and pharmaceuticals to cosmetics, clothing, and electronics. The province's digital initiatives are expected to continue enhancing its ability to combat this issue and protect its citizens and legitimate businesses.
