Dane County Marks September as Suicide Prevention Month
In an effort to address the growing concern of suicide in Dane County, the Dane County Board of Supervisors has declared September as Suicide Prevention Month. This move comes as data from the U.S. National Institutes of Health shows an increase in suicide deaths in both Wisconsin and Dane County, with an average of 73 lives lost each year in Dane County alone.
Supervisor Analiese Eicher emphasised the need for community leaders to take action, stating that it is their responsibility to improve access to preventive resources and mental health treatment, and to foster a culture of empathy, support, and action for those affected by suicide in Dane County.
To this end, several resources have been made available to Dane County residents and visitors. The 9-8-8 number can be called or texted for support, or online chat is available at 988lifeline.org. Additionally, individuals can connect with a mental health professional and trained volunteers by dialing (608) 280-2600.
For more information and resources, visit dhs.wisconsin.gov/crisis. It is important to note that operators at the 988 Lifeline and Dane County Crisis Line are available 24/7, 365 days a year.
While the leader of the initiative in Dane County focused on improving access to and education about prevention resources and health insurance care, as well as fostering a culture of compassion, support, and action for those affected by suicide, is not identified in the available search results, the commitment to this cause remains steadfast.
The community is encouraged to take a proactive approach in addressing suicide, and to reach out to these resources when needed. Together, we can create a supportive environment where everyone feels heard and understood.
