Discover the Bronx Science Pioneers of Trash Management: Your Turn to Join the Team!
In the heart of the Bronx, Bronx Science High School is embarking on a mission to lead the way in waste management among schools. Principal Mr. Geoffrey Hockert, along with the Sustainability Team, the student-led Green Team, and the nonprofit Zero Waste Schools, are collaborating to reduce the school's environmental footprint.
Currently, the school produces one usable bag of compost each day due to cross-contamination between bins. However, this is set to change with the recent acquisition of several new waste disposal stations. These stations feature five bins for liquids, hard plastics and glass, paper, trash, and compost, aiming to simplify the sorting process and reduce contamination.
Mr. Hockert believes that fostering new habits is the key to better waste management. He acknowledges that some people may not care about waste management, but he remains optimistic about the future. To address this, the Sustainability Team aims to expand their focus beyond the lunchroom and encourage students to apply these skills while using the classroom and hallway bins, and continue to do so outside of Bronx Science throughout their everyday lives.
The strategies to improve waste management at Bronx Science include clear labeling and station design, educational signage and outreach, regular monitoring and feedback, involvement of students and staff, and the use of technology and tools. By implementing these approaches, the school hopes to achieve accurate waste sorting, lower contamination rates, and stronger community engagement around sustainability goals.
The Green Team and Zero Waste Schools are actively working towards this transformation. They are conducting leadership meetings, fundraising, and school events to raise awareness about responsible waste management. Sophia One '25, a student leader, emphasizes the importance of individual choices in breaking the herd mentality and encouraging wise decisions about waste management.
In addition, the Green Team has sent representatives to explain responsible recycling at an S.O. cabinet meeting and hosted the Earth Fair. They are also training student volunteers to monitor the cafeteria bins during some lunch periods.
Bronx Science joined a citywide initiative to foster responsible waste habits in early 2023. This move signifies the school's commitment to playing a significant role in waste management. Zero Waste Schools, a nonprofit founded by Bronx Science students last school year, has also campaigned for environmentally friendly legislation in New York state and raised twenty thousand dollars to pay for the twenty-three Centralized Recycling Systems.
With these initiatives in place, Bronx Science is well on its way to becoming a leader in waste management among schools, setting an example for other institutions to follow.
