Going Against the Grain: Diego Maradona's Sedation before His Demise

In a court hearing on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, the intensive care doctor overseeing Diego Maradona's final days revealed today that he sedated the soccer legend against his better judgment. This shocking revelation is part of the trial examining the culpability of seven healthcare professionals, including Maradona's personal doctor, Leopoldo Luque, and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, in his November 25, 2020, demise.

Theheader of intensive care at the clinic where Maradona was operated on prior to his death declared that he sedated the Argentine icon "in total disagreement." The trial aims to determine if these healthcare professionals bear responsibility for Maradona's death.

"He was sedated for 24 hours, but we know that when a patient is sedated to reverse a process of abstinence, it requires a more appropriate process, with a horizon that does not end there," he declared today. The doctor explained that he was influenced by the recommendations of Luque and Cosachov, despite the patient's resistance.

In the lack of a treatment plan, he opted to reduce the sedation dose after 24 hours, at a delicate moment that required "a multidisciplinary team" for a patient who was "at times restless" and difficult to manage.

The head of intensive care at the Olivos Clinic also recommended that Maradona not continue his detoxification at home but rather in a rehabilitation center. However, his suggestion was met with a negative response from Leopoldo Luque, one of the defendants.

Luque and Cosachov, who insisted on sedation, are two of the defendants in the process, along with five other healthcare professionals facing charges of alleged negligence in Maradona's death. They could potentially face prison sentences of eight to 25 years if convicted for "homicide with possible intent." An eighth defendant, a nurse, will be tried separately.

This trial began on March 11 and is expected to last until July, with two hearings per week and nearly 120 witnesses anticipated. The defendants have denied any responsibility for the death of the 1986 World Cup champion with the Argentine national team.

Former player for teams like Boca Juniors, FC Barcelona, and Naples, Maradona passed away at the age of 60 as a result of a cardiopulmonary crisis in a private residence in Tigre, north of Buenos Aires, where he was recovering from neurosurgery for a hematoma in his head[3].
