Domestic violence vigil initially scheduled, later delayed by the city authorities
The city of Alexandria has postponed a planned candlelight vigil for local victims of domestic violence. The Silent Witness Candlelight Vigil and Memorial Program, which was scheduled for Oct. 2, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., at Market Square outside City Hall, was intended to honor local victims and raise public awareness about domestic violence.
The vigil was announced by the Alexandria Domestic Violence Program on a specific Wednesday and was to feature life-sized silhouettes representing Alexandria residents lost to domestic violence. The event was to include a private viewing for families from 6 to 6:30 p.m., followed by the public memorial program.
The postponement of the vigil was announced by the Alexandria Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, with a new date and time for the event yet to be confirmed. Residents in need of domestic violence services can continue to seek help by calling the hotline at 703-746-4911.
Free interpretation services are available for those who need them by emailing [email protected] or calling 703-746-3960. The city also offers disability accommodations; for more information, contact [email protected] or 703-746-5694.
The Silent Witness Alexandria initiative aims to provide a space for healing through a visual memorial, bringing attention to the issue of domestic violence in the community. Information regarding domestic violence services in Alexandria can be found on the city's website at alexandriava.gov/DomesticViolence.
Just hours after the vigil was announced, it was not held as planned. The city encourages residents to stay informed about the new date and time for the event, and to continue supporting the fight against domestic violence in Alexandria.
