Elderly nuns take up residence at their convent following an escape from a residential care facility

In a heartwarming turn of events, three nuns - Bernadette, Regina, and Rita - have returned to their beloved town of Elsbethen, Austria, after a controversial eviction from their convent late last year. The eviction, enforced by the Archdiocese of Salzburg and the Chorherrenstift Reichersberg, had taken place in late 2023, leaving the women to move to a senior residence. However, the women's spirit remained undeterred, and they found themselves warmly welcomed back in Elsbethen by their former students, who have taken them in and are now caring for them. Upon their return, the monastery gate was found locked, a sight that brought back memories of the day they were forced to leave. The women, however, were not deterred and managed to gain entry with the help of a local locksmith. One of the nuns, identified as 'I', expressed her feelings, stating, 'I've been obedient all my life, but now it's enough.' The sisters shared their displeasure over being removed from the convent, asserting that it was a breach of their right to stay there for life. Provost Markus Grasl, the nuns' new superior, was surprised by their escape. He emphasized that the women received good medical care at their new residence, but the sisters found it hard to imagine the convent without its nuns. Bernadette, Regina, and Rita have since regained their place, surrounded by the affection and care of their former students. The rooms of the convent, however, remain uninhabitable, and the nuns' condition is considered precarious for independent living. Despite the challenges, the three nuns are grateful for the support they have received and are looking forward to continuing their lives in Elsbethen, surrounded by the love and care of their community.
