€5.5M Boosts DECIPHER-M: The New Fight Against Cancer Metastases

A groundbreaking research project, DECIPHER-M, has kicked off with €5.5 million in initial funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The project, set to run from 2023 to 2030, aims to tackle one of oncology's biggest challenges: cancer cell spread, or metastases. Led by the Else Kröner Fresenius Center Dresden (EKFZ) for Digital Health, the interdisciplinary project brings together experts from Aachen, Essen, Heidelberg, Mainz, Munich, and Dresden.

Metastases pose a significant hurdle in cancer treatment, making it harder to combat the disease. DECIPHER-M seeks to improve treatment options by understanding cancer cell spread better. The project, coordinated by Prof. Jakob Nikolas Kather, takes a multimodal approach, connecting various medical data to gain a comprehensive understanding of this process.

The project's total planned investment is around €9 million. Key partners include the University Hospital RWTH Aachen, led by Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Christiane Kuhl, and other renowned institutions. DECIPHER-M aims to predict individual metastasis risk more precisely and develop personalized treatment strategies, ultimately enhancing patient quality of life.

With a €5.5 million boost from the BMBF, the DECIPHER-M project is poised to revolutionize cancer treatment. By improving our understanding of cancer cell spread and developing personalized treatment strategies, the project's interdisciplinary team strives to enhance patient outcomes and quality of life.
