Title: Chowing Down on UV-Treated Mealworm Powder: Europe's Latest Permissible Protein Source

Are you ready for a radical shift in your grocery shopping? As of today, February 10, 2025, UV-treated mealworm larvae powder is making its grand entrance into the EU food scene.

Say hello to your new pantry pals

Starting today, this UV-zapped ingredient will be sprinkled into bread, cakes, cheese, pasta, processed potato products, and fruit and vegetable compotes. Fret not, the UV treatment is a sanitizing step to eliminate any creepy crawlies!

The dosage varies between foods, with baked goods hogging up to 4 grams per 100 grams, while cheese keeps it at a more modest 1 gram per 100 grams.

Why the buzz about mealworms?

This transformation was initiated by Nutri'Earth, who back in 2019, had submitted an application to the commission. They've now got the green light, so expect these insect powders to pop up in German supermarkets soon. This approval is valid for an initial 5-year period. Although insects aren’t exactly the common ingredient in the EU food industry, they're increasingly popular in international cuisine and require testing and approval under the Novel Food Regulation.

This isn't our first stroll in the bug-filled park, my friend. Locusts, mealworms, crickets, and mushroom beetles have already been mashed up into delicacies over the past few years. However, the powder form of UV-treated mealworms is a nouveau famish among the edible insect crew.

A sustainable powerhouse with a twist

Mealworm powder is a meaty protein substitute, packing twice the protein punch compared to beef and chicken. Consume these bug bites and you'll be served with omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B, and various minerals. Plus, the UV treatment elevates the vitamin D content.

Now, if you're prone to allergies, particularly shellfish or dust mites, tread cautiously with these winged warriors.

Spotting bugs in your grub

Since mealworms have now earned their place on your dinner plate, you'll see them listed under the ingredients. Keep your eyes peeled for "UV-treated larvae powder of Tenebrio molitor (mealworm)" in the list.

For vegetarians or vegans, fear not, these chaps are banned from your food territory.
