Expanded Commitment of 85 Million Euros for Solingen Clinic

The Solingen Hospital in Germany is set to undergo a significant expansion with the construction of a new ward building. The state has approved funding of 85 million euros for the project, with a third of the grant allocated for climate protection measures.

The new building, scheduled to begin construction in spring 2026 and complete by the end of 2028, will meet the highest medical and technical standards. It will feature eight full floors, each with balconies attached to patient rooms serving as passive sun protection.

A key feature of the new building will be its bright brick facade acting as a natural heat storage. This, along with floor heating and heat pump technology in all rooms, will contribute to energy efficiency and reduced energy consumption.

To further promote sustainability, the new building will be equipped with a photovoltaic system for self-production of electricity, a helicopter landing pad for emergency patient transport, and underground rainwater tanks to collect water during heavy rain, reducing overall water consumption and protecting against flooding.

The new ward building will also house a modern kitchen, with construction costs estimated at around 13 million euros. Green roof areas will be incorporated into the building design to improve the microclimate.

The commissioning phase is expected to begin in spring 2029, following the demolition of the old building G, which is planned for mid-2025. The building application for the new ward building will be submitted in May 2025.

The new bed tower of the Municipal Clinic Solingen will be outfitted with a state-of-the-art emergency department, as well as capacities for neurology and neuroradiology. The project, overseen by NRW Minister of Health Karl-Josef Laumann, aims to provide top-tier medical care while minimizing its environmental impact.

The new ward building at the Solingen Hospital will not only adhere to the highest medical standards but also prioritize health-and-wellness, incorporating innovative climate protection measures such as a natural heat storage system and energy-efficient technologies. As part of the science-driven expansion, the building will be equipped with a modern kitchen and green roof areas, enhancing its sustainability and microclimate. The hospital's updated facilities will cater to top-tier care in areas like neurology and emergency medicine, all while minimizing its environmental footprint.
