Urgent Call to Speed Up Electronic Ankle Monitor Adoption for Femicide Prevention in Lower Saxony
Accelerated Use of Electronic Ankle Bracelets Advocated - Faster speeds needed for the deployment of electronic ankle cuffs
Got some strong opinions and a burning desire to make a difference? Let's dive into the issue at hand: preventing femicides. The women's advocacy group, Terre de Femes, is demanding a speedier introduction of electronic ankle monitors for violent offenders in Lower Saxony. Other states like Hesse and Saxony have already integrated this measure into their legislation, but Lower Saxony's still lagging behind.
"It's high time we reviewed the Protection Against Violence Act orders, including restraining orders," says Sina Tonk, Terre de Femes' resident expert on domestic violence. And guess what? They've got something brewing in Lower Saxony right now.
Lower Saxony's Minister of the Interior, Daniela Behrens, is in favor of this modern take on surveillance, akin to Spain's model. The electronic ankle monitor helps in keeping tabs on offenders, preventing them from approaching their victims again.
Now, you might wonder if this gizmo is actually making a difference? Well, since Spain introduced electronic ankle monitors for male violent offenders, they've reported a significant drop in femicides. Femicides are violent crimes in which women are murdered because of their gender, with partners or ex-partners being the most common perpetrators.
Recent weeks have seen a string of such tragedies in Lower Saxony. In Nienburg, a 37-year-old woman was brutally stabbed on a parking lot, with her ex-partner being the prime suspect. Similarly in Goslar, a man allegedly set his wife on fire, whose subsequent fall out of a window proved fatal.
In Varel (Friesland district), a woman was reportedly run over and killed by her husband. The 38-year-old is charged with murder, and the couple was living separately, with a court already banning the man from approaching the 37-year-old.
All we can say is, it's about damn time these femicides stop. Let's get serious about this electronic ankle monitor business and protect our women. Lower Saxony CDU is also on board with the idea. Let's make it happen!
