Leaving Germany Without Giving Back: CDU's Proposed Strategy for Foreign Medical Grads

German Conservative Party (CDU) intends to maintain foreign students in the medical field within Germany's borders

In the face of Germany's growing health care crisis, the CDU is advocating for a new approach to handling foreign medical students who choose to leave the country after completing their studies. "Those who've benefited from our top-tier education shouldn't just disappear as soon as they graduate," said Sepp Müller, deputy chairman of the Union faction, to Bild newspaper.

The CDU argues that these foreign graduates should be obligated to serve in rural areas for at least five years. In case they refuse, they'd be required to return the expenses of their education. A similar plea was made by Tino Sorge, State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Health, who emphasized the importance of retaining such highly qualified individuals in Germany.

Florian Müller, the research policy spokesman of the Union faction, suggested that the responsibility of implementing this refund system lies with the federal states. He emphasized the need for Germany to prioritize attracting and retaining international talents post-university.

Germany currently grapples with a severe shortage of around 5,000 family doctors, as stated by the CDU politician to the newspaper. Although specifics on the CDU's proposed measures are yet to be detailed, potential strategies to retain foreign medical graduates in rural areas could include:

  1. Compensation: Offering competitive salaries and benefits could draw foreign medical graduates to rural areas.
  2. Simplified Recruitment: Streamlining bureaucratic processes for foreign medical graduates could facilitate their integration into the German healthcare system.
  3. Training and Integration: Cultural adaptation and professional training programs could enhance foreign medical graduates' integration into local healthcare systems.
  4. Incentives: Offering incentives like housing support, student loan forgiveness, or additional benefits could motivate foreign medical graduates to stay and practice in rural areas.

Stay tuned for further updates regarding the CDU's proposed measures to ensure the retention of foreign medical professionals in rural Germany.
