Government of Western Cape acknowledges and applauds women driving the cargo sector
Women Powering the Western Cape's Freight Industry
Women in the Western Cape are playing a crucial and multifaceted role in the region's freight industry. From professional truck drivers to emotional and logistical support at home, their contributions are indispensable, helping to sustain the supply chains that deliver essential goods like food, fuel, and medicine across the province and country.
In August 2025, during Women’s Month and Freight Focus Month, the Western Cape Mobility Department hosted a special event to honour these women. The event recognised the strength, resilience, and sacrifice of women behind the wheel as well as wives and partners who manage households and provide emotional support during taxing long-haul journeys.
Minister Isaac Sileku emphasised that these women are often invisible but are truly the backbone of the freight industry, carrying “the weight of sacrifice and service” essential to keeping the Western Cape moving economically.
However, these women face challenges. Long periods of absence due to extended time on the road can impact family life and milestones. The emotional burden of managing households alone while partners endure demanding work conditions is also significant. Moreover, their critical contribution to supply chains is often underappreciated in the broader public eye.
The appreciation event highlighted the dual role these women play: both as professionals contributing directly to the freight industry and as the emotional anchors behind the scenes supporting their families and partners. Participants like Sanshia Witbooi, a truck driver's wife, reflected on the complex journey of managing the demands and sacrifices their loved ones face on the road, and the importance of community recognition and support.
Minister Sileku acknowledged the contributions of these women, emphasising that behind every long freight journey is a woman supporting the driver. He encouraged all Western Cape residents to show appreciation for the people who make freight possible during the Freight Focus Month campaign.
Muneera Allie, the department's Head of Communication, expressed sincere gratitude towards the women in the freight industry, noting that they are often invisible to the public eye but their strength holds families, businesses, and supply chains together.
Lauryn Rhodenburg, a female truck driver, expressed that driving a truck is a passion and she believes women bring a unique strength to the freight industry. She is proud to be part of the change that inspires more women to join freight transport.
The event was a gesture of gratitude to the women in the freight industry, reminding Sanshia Witbooi of the community's support for the role of women in the industry. Lauryn Rhodenburg felt inspired and motivated, believing that her presence at the event would encourage more women to join the freight industry.

As such, the Western Cape Mobility Department's recognition of the women who power the freight system is a significant step towards acknowledging their invaluable contributions and overcoming the challenges they face.
