Group Meeting Recap June 2025
In a series of changes within Parkinson's NSW, new leaders have been appointed for several support groups across the region. The latest updates highlight the dedication of volunteers and the continued growth of these essential communities.
Andrew has taken over as the new leader of the Taree Support Group, succeeding Annette who will remain involved in the background. Meanwhile, Laurelle has become the new leader of the Port Stephens Support Group, replacing Bob who stepped down after six years in the role. Laurelle, who has been Secretary for several years in the Port Stephens group, has volunteered to take on the leadership role.
Christine Gray has been appointed as the Treasurer in the Port Stephens Support Group, while Kaye Robinson continues her service as the Welfare Officer. Annette, the previous leader of the Taree Support Group, will assist the new leader, Andrew, in his new role.
The small, intimate groups in Yass and Crookwell are led by individuals living with Parkinson's, fostering a sense of friendship and trust among members. The groups have recently been visited by a Parkinson's nurse, Lauren, and another unspecified individual.
Recent months have seen a flurry of activity with support group visits. Notably, Marketing and Digital Manager, Mirelle Brockett, visited the Inverell Support Group. The Chinatown Bilingual Support Group celebrated its 20th anniversary, attended by Donor Development Manager, Gary Cowlishaw, and Direct Marketing Officer, Natalee Robotham.
The Goulburn Support Group has requested a visit to assist in developing their vision statement, while the Bathurst Support Group had a turnout of almost 40 people. Mary-Kay Walker, the CEO of Parkinson's NSW, and an unspecified individual attended the Bathurst Support Group.
The Kiama Support Group held another successful Community Seminar, this time featuring guest speakers on Parkinson's-related topics. The event was a collaborative effort between Parkinson's NSW and the National Parkinson's Alliance. Christine McGee, Education Manager at Parkinson's NSW, attended the seminar.
Parkinson's NSW Counsellor, Shushann Movsessian, visited the Manly-Mosman Support Group, and Mary Kay Walker and InfoLine Nurse, Melanie Ledbury, visited the Belrose Young Onset Support Group.
In a heartwarming display of community spirit, Yvonne McGrath, a participant in the Northern Rivers (Ballina) Support Group, organized a high tea fundraiser that raised $3,000 for Parkinson's NSW. The Chinatown Bilingual Support Group was also presented with a Community Hero certificate.
These changes and achievements underscore the vibrant and active nature of Parkinson's NSW support groups. As the organisation continues to grow and evolve, it remains committed to supporting those affected by Parkinson's disease.
- In coordination with Parkinson's NSW, a health-and-wellness event focused on mental-health discussions might be organized in the near future by the Taree Support Group under the new leadership of Andrew.
- To further the understanding of Parkinson's disease, a series of science-based lectures could be initiated by the Goulburn Support Group, looking to Lauren, the Parkinson's nurse, for potential guidance and support.
