Harmful algal proliferation expands across South Australia's waterscape
In a recent development, top podiatrists have recommended oral and topical antifungal medications as effective solutions for treating toenail fungus. The recommendations focus primarily on prescription oral and topical antifungal medications, which have proven to be successful in managing the infection.
Oral antifungal medication, such as terbinafine (Lamisil) and itraconazole (Sporanox), are often considered the most effective treatment due to their faster results and higher cure rates compared to topical treatments. Terbinafine cures toenail fungus about 72% of the time with a typical course of 6 to 12 weeks, while itraconazole is effective in about 60% of cases with a similar treatment duration. However, these medications require a prescription and may have side effects such as headache, stomach upset, or skin rash.
Topical antifungal treatments are also used, especially for mild to moderate infections or for patients who cannot take oral medications. FDA-approved prescription solutions like efinaconazole 10% (brands: Clenafin, Jublia) and tavaborole 5% require daily application for about 48 weeks. These medications act on the nail surface and surrounding skin but tend to work slower and need strict adherence to treatment schedules for best results.
It is essential to start with a proper diagnosis before commencing treatment. For faster and more reliable results, oral antifungal medication like terbinafine is recommended. For less severe cases or when oral medications are contraindicated, topical antifungal treatments like efinaconazole may be more suitable. Treatment duration can be lengthy since the fungus must grow out with the nail, often taking several months to fully clear the infection.
