"Health Secretary praises 'digital transformation in healthcare' as MHRA unveils fresh digital center"

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has announced the launch of a new digital hub in Leeds, UK. The hub aims to drive digital innovation and accelerate the development of the UK’s digital health and life sciences sector [1][4][5].

Located in the heart of Leeds city centre, the hub will modernize regulatory processes, strengthen MHRA’s regional presence, and foster collaboration with digital health networks, NHS organizations, and leading academic institutions across the UK. Leeds was chosen due to its strong expertise in digital health and its robust academic and NHS ties.

The initiative is part of a broader commitment to enabling life-saving healthcare innovations to reach patients faster and supporting regional growth in the life sciences industry. The MHRA will initially recruit around 30 permanent, highly-skilled roles for the hub, with roles focusing on digital delivery, software development, and data science.

In addition to the digital hub, the MHRA has also launched a stakeholder survey [6]. The survey is related to the Medicines and Medical Devices Act 2021 and aims to gather insights from stakeholders on various aspects of the Act.

Meanwhile, a review of mental health app regulation has prompted a trade body launch. The new guidance for digital mental health apps has been issued in the "Digital Health & AI Insights" section [2]. Chris Whitehouse, chair of the Urology Trade Association and a political consultant, is an expert on medical technology policy and regulation. He is also governor of the Anscombe Bioethics Centre and an advisor to MedTech suppliers through Whitehouse Communications [3].
