High number of wasp sightings in summer season explained.
In Quebec, this summer has seen an unexpected surge in the number of wasps, causing a busy season for exterminators. According to Denis Dion, an evaluator at Exterminateur de Montreal, the high number of wasp nests has led to a particularly busy schedule.
The increase in wasps can be attributed to a milder winter, which has resulted in a higher survival rate for queen wasps. These queens hibernate during the winter and are fertilized by males before starting new colonies in the spring.
Dion has noticed an increase in new wasp species not previously found in Quebec, a trend he attributes to climate change. Wasps communicate by smell, and it seems that the changing climate is helping these new species to thrive.
To help prevent attracting wasps, keeping a clean space is essential. Wasps will eat fruit or meat if given the opportunity, so ensuring that food waste is disposed of properly can help deter them.
It's important to note that wasps do not respond to "fake nests" purchased from hardware stores. Nests under building structures can be difficult to observe, and nests are usually spotted in spring, around June.
A left unsupervised nest can lead to more nests, so it's crucial to address wasp problems promptly. Long periods without precipitation are usually followed by an increase in new nests and wasps, while the amount of summer rain can slow down the expansion of wasps.
In addition, the proliferation of wasps could become the new normal due to climate change. Denis Dion suggests a shortening of the cycles between years with a high number of wasps, from 3-4 year cycles to potentially just one year.
There are more horned gall wasps in summer because the warm temperatures and increased plant growth provide ideal conditions for their development and reproduction.
While the surge in wasps may be concerning, it's important to remember that they play a crucial role in our ecosystem. If you encounter a wasp nest, it's best to seek the help of a professional exterminator to ensure safe and effective removal.
