India and Trinidad and Tobago Strengthen Ties on Independence Day
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Trinidad and Tobago Foreign Minister Sean Sobers exchanged Independence Day greetings, marking a significant moment in the bilateral relationship between the two nations.
On this occasion, Minister Jaishankar posted a message on Twitter, expressing his warm greetings to Minister Sobers, the Government, and the people of Trinidad and Tobago. The tweet included a picture of the Indian and Trinidad and Tobago flags, symbolising the shared bond between the two nations.
In a gesture of goodwill, Minister Jaishankar also shared an old photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
Prime Minister Modi announced a decision to issue Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards up to the sixth generation of the Indian diaspora of Trinidad and Tobago. This move is expected to strengthen the ties between the two nations and provide a pathway for the Indian community in Trinidad and Tobago to connect more closely with their roots.
The leaders also acknowledged the importance of Nelson Island as a location for Cultural Tourism. Recognising its historical significance, they agreed to explore ways to preserve and promote this important site.
In the realm of climate action, Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar appreciated Prime Minister Modi's 'Mission LiFE' initiative, which promotes a lifestyle of mindful consumption and sustainable living. She also acknowledged the relevance of this initiative in mobilizing global citizens towards climate-conscious behavior.
Trinidad and Tobago decided to join the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and the Global Biofuel Alliance, reflecting their shared commitment to climate action, resilience building, and sustainable development. The Government of Trinidad and Tobago also appreciated India's offer of a grant to provide a rooftop photovoltaic (PV) system for the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign and Caricom Affairs.
During their discussions, the leaders also agreed to explore further collaboration in early warning systems developed by India for disaster risk reduction. The leaders of India and Trinidad and Tobago reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the bonds between the two nations and working together for a sustainable and resilient future.
