Germany Experiences High Rates of Loneliness Across Age Groups

According to a survey conducted by the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) in December, 58% of individuals in Germany struggle with feelings of loneliness. The younger generations appear to be particularly affected. The federal government has previously implemented a strategy to combat loneliness, which Prien, a regional politician, intends to carry forward.

Prien, a member of the CDU party, announced the commencement of the third Action Week against loneliness. This initiative aims to address the rising instances of loneliness among individuals, irrespective of age.

The previous federal government tackled loneliness through a strategic approach. Prien now strives to continue this effort. The specifics of Prien's strategies remain to be seen, as information about her continuation plan following the previous federal government's initiative is not currently available.

However, it is known that the German Federal Government has been actively addressing loneliness, particularly among older populations, through various initiatives since 2018. The Federal Ministry for Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth has been instrumental in countering loneliness and social isolation, funding projects like the "Stärkung der Teilhabe älterer Menschen - gegen Einsamkeit und soziale Isolation" (Strengthening the participation of older people - countering loneliness and social isolation) until 2027. Additionally, the Kompetenznetz Einsamkeit (KNE, Loneliness Network Germany) has been supported, aiming to address loneliness across all age groups and promote pertinent knowledge and interventions.

Sunday marked the commencement of Prien's Action Week against Loneliness. Further updates on continuing strategies against loneliness will likely emerge from the current government's initiatives or announcements.

  1. Prien, having announced the start of the third Action Week against loneliness, aims to build upon the employment of strategic approaches previously implemented by the federal government to combat loneliness amongst all age groups, particularly fueled by the rising concern for mental health and health-and-wellness within the community.
  2. The ongoing science-based initiatives led by the German Federal Government, such as the Kompetenznetz Einsamkeit (KNE, Loneliness Network Germany), aim to further refine employment policies that promote knowledge and interventions for addressing loneliness and social isolation across age groups, working towards a more integrated and healthier community policy.
