"Intense Debate: Expansion of Smoking Restrictions on Baltic Sea Shorelines"
In the picturesque coastal region of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a growing trend towards smoke-free beach zones is being observed. This move is aimed at reducing fire hazards, litter, and protecting public health.
Göhren on Rügen was one of the first places in Germany to establish smoke-free beach sections back in 2010, following a survey among holidaymakers that revealed 32 percent wanted such areas. Two sections were marked as smoke-free as a result. Alexander Stein, from the Göhren tourist administration, has had positive experiences with this initiative.
Similarly, smoke-free beach sections can be found in Rostock. However, the designation of non-smoking beaches in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is differentiated, according to Birgit Hesse, president of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern tourism association. Each municipality decides within the framework of municipal self-government what kind of beach use it wants to provide.
Birgit Hesse also suggests that addressing the issue of smoke-free beaches can be sensible for the protection of families with children. In Binz bay, five active beach areas and three large family beaches are officially smoke-free, with signs at the beach entrances indicating the smoke-free areas. Beach ashtrays are provided in Boltenhagen, Rerik, Usedom, and Koserow, but these areas are not designated as non-smoking.
Complaints about smoke pollution on beaches in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are at a very low level. In Prerow, the local council wants to discuss smoke-free beach sections at its next meeting, following the example set by France's smoking ban in public spaces.
Interestingly, in Koserow, the regulation for non-smoking beaches has been withdrawn. In Boltenhagen, Rerik on the Mecklenburg Baltic coast, and on Usedom, there are no non-smoking beach areas.
Creating non-smoking areas is particularly well-received by families who rent beach chairs, according to Alexander Stein. However, it's important to note that some hotels and resorts in the region promote smoke-free premises indoors, but this does not directly confirm smoke-free beach zones.
For detailed and current information on smoke-free beach zones in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, consulting local government websites or environmental agencies might offer recent regulations and public feedback.
