Birgit Hesse also suggests that addressing the issue of smoke-free beaches can be sensible for the protection of families with children. In Binz bay, five active beach areas and three large family beaches are officially smoke-free, with signs at the beach entrances indicating the smoke-free areas. Beach ashtrays are provided in Boltenhagen, Rerik, Usedom, and Koserow, but these areas are not designated as non-smoking.
Complaints about smoke pollution on beaches in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are at a very low level. In Prerow, the local council wants to discuss smoke-free beach sections at its next meeting, following the example set by France's smoking ban in public spaces.
Interestingly, in Koserow, the regulation for non-smoking beaches has been withdrawn. In Boltenhagen, Rerik on the Mecklenburg Baltic coast, and on Usedom, there are no non-smoking beach areas.
Creating non-smoking areas is particularly well-received by families who rent beach chairs, according to Alexander Stein. However, it's important to note that some hotels and resorts in the region promote smoke-free premises indoors, but this does not directly confirm smoke-free beach zones.
