The North Frisian island of Amrum is set to receive a significant boost in its medical care services, following the announcement of a 600,000 euro grant from Schleswig-Holstein. This grant, aimed at ensuring long-term medical care on the island, will be used for the construction of a municipal health centre in Wittdün.

The health centre, to be leased by the Medical Care Centre (MVZ) Amrum gGmbH, is a joint initiative by the municipalities of Wittdün, Nebel, and Norddorf. State Secretary for Rural Areas, Anne Bennett-Sturies, praised the foresight and cooperation of these municipalities during the grant presentation.

The old practice rooms of the hospital currently house the MVZ, but it is scheduled to move into the new building in the second quarter of 2026. The move to the new premises, located in Wittdün, is set for the beginning of 2027. The new building is being constructed by the municipality of Wittdün.

The grant does not specify any conditions or requirements for the construction or operation of the MVZ. Six apartments will be created in the new building for seasonal doctors, without additional funding.

The discontinuation of one of the two general practitioner practices on the island occurred at the end of June. The team from this practice is now employed by the MVZ. The remaining general practitioner on the island announced two years ago that she would give up her self-employment.

The MVZ started operations in July, providing basic medical care for the approximately 2,300 inhabitants of Amrum and the around 145,000 annual tourists. The specific medical services offered by the health centre are yet to be specified.

The construction of the health centre is expected to strengthen the attractiveness of the island, according to State Secretary Bennett-Sturies. This development is a significant step towards ensuring the island's residents and visitors have access to reliable and long-term medical care.
