Manipal Hospital Varthur Organizes Educational Event Focusing on Breastfeeding, With an Intention to Support New Parents During the Early Stages of Parenthood

Manipal Hospital Varthur Road, Bangalore, recently conducted a breastfeeding awareness event on 2nd August 2025, as part of the global celebrations for World Breastfeeding Week (1st to 7th August). The event aimed to support, promote, and empower mothers to understand and overcome challenges faced during motherhood.

Dr. Anand Patil, Consultant - NICU and Pediatrics, and Dr. Prachi Kathuria Gera, Consultant - Lactation, led the event. Dr. Patil emphasized that breastmilk is an adaptive nutritional system tailored to the baby's needs, while Dr. Gera stated that breastfeeding is a shared commitment, not solely a mother's responsibility.

The event concluded with new and soon-to-be-parents leaving their handprints on a breastfeeding pledge wall and the hospital inaugurating a dedicated breastfeeding room. The event also featured interactive activities, a Q&A session, and a panel discussion with experts in NICU, Pediatrics, and OBG.

During the event, Dr. Prachi Kathuria Gera discussed the key indicators of adequate breastfeeding. These include:

  • Sufficient urine output from the baby: at least 6 wet diapers per day.
  • Regular stools indicating good digestion.
  • Healthy weight gain after the first week of life.
  • Visible satisfaction in the baby after feeding.
  • The mother should experience no persistent pain during breastfeeding, though mild discomfort in the first couple of days is normal and expected.

Dr. Gera emphasized monitoring these signs to ensure effective breastfeeding and highlighted that persistent maternal pain is a red flag requiring immediate attention.
