Mary E. Brancov, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi Win 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine

The 2025 Nobel Prize season begins with the announcement of the Physiology or Medicine laureates. Mary E. Brancov, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi have been recognised for their groundbreaking work on peripheral immune tolerance.

The trio's discoveries have revolutionised our understanding of how the immune system differentiates between 'self' and 'non-self', preventing it from attacking the body's own tissues. Mary Brancov, a senior program manager at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, and Fred Ramsdell, a scientific consultant at Sonoma Biotherapeutics in San Francisco, have made significant contributions to this field. Joining them is Shimon Sakaguchi, a distinguished professor at the Center for Advanced Research in Immunology at Osaka University in Japan.

This prestigious award is the first in the series of 2025 Nobel Prizes, with more laureates to be announced until October 13. It follows the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, awarded to Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James Robinson for their studies on institutional emergence and development. The names of 2024 nominees in Economic Sciences remain confidential for 50 years.
