Mass of Siaya health workers petition the regional assembly, demand reinstatement following en masse termination

In a recent development, 259 health workers from Siaya County have petitioned the Siaya County Assembly, alleging unfair dismissal and non-payment of salaries. The petitioners claim they were among the 502 health workers recruited and deployed in January 2025, and served for eight months without pay before their dismissal on September 11.

The county government labeled these workers as 'ghost workers' and alleged that they had fake employment documents. However, the petitioners assert that they had undergone two separate verification exercises by the county government before their dismissal and were confirmed as duly posted and serving in their respective stations.

Speaker George Okode has directed the assembly's general oversight committee to investigate the petitioners' recruitment, deployment, verification, and dismissal. The committee has been tasked with establishing the status and authenticity of the petitioners' employment documents and investigating any wrongdoing on the part of the concerned parties.

The committee has 30 days to complete the probe. Meanwhile, the petitioners are yet to receive any official communication regarding their dismissal or the reasons behind it. They demand reinstatement or a lawful justification for their removal.

The petitioners also ask the assembly to compel the county executive committee for Health and the county public service board to produce official records of the recruitment and verification exercises. The availability of such records may shed light on the circumstances surrounding the recruitment of the 502 health workers in January 2025, for which the available search results do not contain any information.

The investigation into this matter is ongoing, and the Siaya County Assembly's general oversight committee is working diligently to uncover the truth and ensure justice for the petitioners. The outcome of this investigation could have significant implications for the health sector in Siaya County and the wider region.
