Medical professional Lainie Ross, Bioethicist at our facility, has been chosen for the National Academy of Medicine.

Lainie Ross, a globally recognised bioethicist and pediatrician, has been elected to the prestigious National Academy of Medicine (NAM). This esteemed organisation is home to the best minds in American health care and academic medicine.

Ross, also known as Lainie Friedman Ross, took up the role as the founding chair of the Health Humanities and Bioethics department at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) in 2023. Her work at URMC has been instrumental in shaping new consensus recommendations for pediatric decision-making, shifting the focus from the traditional "best interest of the child" standard towards promoting the broader "child's interests" and supporting parental decision-making authority.

Ross's scholarship extends to ethical issues in pediatric care, including the debate over genomic sequencing of healthy newborns. She is renowned for her thoughtful policy frameworks and educational efforts that enhance ethical capacity in clinical and translational research, particularly in the areas of pediatric and population health interventions.

Ross's election to NAM is a testament to her standing as a leading figure at the intersection of pediatrics and bioethics. Her work encompasses both theoretical and applied ethics in healthcare, aiming to improve decision-making for children and families.

In addition to her work at URMC, Ross is also known for her work on ethical and policy issues related to organ transplantation, genetics and genomics, clinical research ethics, human subject protections, and pediatrics. Recently, she led a group of national experts in developing new consensus recommendations for pediatric decision-making.

Ross offers valuable tools and resources to address controversial and complex cases, and ensures future clinicians are equipped with the best education and training in bioethics and health humanities. The URMC, known for its innovative biopsychosocial framework, has made a commitment to this cause through the new department Ross leads.

The medical center, which is among the first in the country with a humanities division and is now one of eight academic medical centers in the nation with a dedicated humanities and bioethics department, is proud to have Ross as part of its team. Ross, who expressed surprise and excitement about her election to NAM, continues to provide expert advice nationally and internationally on health, medicine, and related policy.
