Minister Petra Grimm-Benne allocates €1.3 million for the reconstruction of the psychiatric hospital in Neinstedt
Renovation of Psychiatric Institutsambulanz in Thale Aims to Improve Mental Health Care
As of August 14, 2025, the Psychiatric Institutsambulanz (PIA) of the specialist hospital "Hildegard von Bingen" in Thale, Germany, is undergoing a comprehensive renovation. The project, funded by the Corona special fund, seeks to enhance the PIA's ability to provide continuous, high-quality mental health care while safeguarding patients and staff against current and future pandemic challenges.
The renovation includes modernizing facilities, improving hygiene and safety measures, enhancing digital infrastructure, staff training, and workflow optimization.
- Modernized Facilities
The PIA will be equipped with updated clinical rooms designed to create a more therapeutic and comfortable environment. This includes better lighting, soundproofing, and patient-friendly furnishings to reduce anxiety and support recovery.
- Improved Hygiene and Safety Measures
To increase pandemic resilience, the renovation incorporates advanced ventilation systems with HEPA filters, hands-free sanitation stations, and redesigned patient flow pathways to minimize contact and crowding in waiting and treatment areas.
- Enhanced Digital Infrastructure
The PIA will integrate telemedicine capabilities, allowing for remote consultations and follow-up appointments, which will reduce the need for in-person visits during infection waves and improve access for patients with mobility or transportation challenges.
- Staff Training and Workflow Optimization
Along with the physical upgrades, staff will receive updated training on infection control and remote care delivery. The workflow will be restructured to facilitate quick adaptation to changing public health conditions without compromising patient care.
- Patient-Centered Design
Spaces will be configured to promote privacy and safety while also providing communal areas that support social interaction and group therapies when conditions allow, balancing isolation needs with the therapeutic benefits of socialization.
The renovations collectively enhance the PIA’s ability to provide continuous, high-quality mental health care while safeguarding patients and staff against current and future pandemic challenges.
The project aims to create a direct connection between the PIA and the psychiatric specialist hospital. The Evangelical Foundation Neinstedt, led by Pedagogical-Diaconal Director Ronny Rösler, is pleased with the support and is working towards improving the supply structure for people in stressful situations and people with disabilities.
The foundation is receiving 1.3 million euros from the state of Saxony-Anhalt for the renovation of the PIA. Health Minister Petra Grimm-Benne emphasized the importance of creating good living and treatment options for those in need of care and people with mental illnesses.
Both the renovation of the existing building and an extension are planned for the project. The extension will accommodate patient rooms, and the renovation includes converting 3- and 4-bed rooms into single and double rooms, many with private bathrooms. The new building in Neinstedt is seen as a valuable lesson drawn from the Corona pandemic. The room layout allows for separation of infectious from non-infectious patients in the event of a pandemic. The goal is to ensure the best possible supply for the population and to increase quality of life and optimize infection protection.
