Mother Still Insists on BJ Penn: False Identity

In the world of mixed martial arts, the name BJ Penn is synonymous with greatness. However, the former two-division UFC champion is currently embroiled in a contentious legal battle with his mother, Lorraine Shin.

According to Shin's testimony, Penn has been harassing her, asking for information about family assets. This behaviour has led to a protective/restraining order (TRO) being issued against Penn, which is currently in effect until Nov. 23, 2025. Shin may seek an extension of this order.

The TRO requires Penn to maintain a distance of at least 100 yards from Shin, with no contact allowed. The incident that sparked this order occurred on May 25 at the family's Puueo Street home. Lorraine Shin alleged that Penn shoved a flashlight into her face and pushed her against a car during the incident. She also claimed that he tried to retrieve personal belongings from her car, blinding her with the flashlight's light.

Penn, who is currently free on $2,000 bail, disputes the legitimacy of the Lorraine P. Shin Trust, which is listed as the owner of the Puueo Street property according to a document downloaded from the Hawaii County Property Tax website. He has also claimed that he was "wrongfully removed" from the house and has been moving between hotel rooms.

In a surprising turn of events, Shin provided a three-bedroom home for Penn to stay while he's not legally allowed to be at the Puueo Street home. However, Penn asked Shin to transfer all properties and assets into his name, a request she declined due to her belief that he is an imposter.

Penn is currently representing himself in court, as he does not have legal counsel. His legal troubles stem from allegations of assault and abuse against his mother, who has publicly stated that Penn suffers from Capgras delusional syndrome—a psychiatric disorder where one believes that loved ones are replaced by impostors. This has complicated the legal and personal dynamics of the case, with Penn claiming that his family is involved in a conspiracy against him.

Penn has appealed publicly to UFC CEO Dana White and other former associates for help amid the ongoing crisis, indicating he feels isolated and under threat of arrest if he approaches his mother’s home or retrieves belongings. His court battles and mental health issues remain ongoing with no resolution yet, and he continues to make controversial statements on social media during this period.

As of now, Penn has three separate ongoing criminal cases, all misdemeanors - an abuse case, a refusal to comply with a stay-away order, and a violation of a temporary restraining order. The next hearings for these cases are scheduled for Oct. 20 in two cases and Nov. 3 in the third in Hilo Circuit Court. The outcome of these hearings could significantly impact Penn's future and his relationship with his mother.
