Mpox suspicion confirmed in Maasin City's single reported case

Maasin City in Eastern Visayas reported a suspected case of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) on Friday, May 30, 2025. Maasin City Mayor Nacional Mercado confirmed the suspected case, which involves a 55-year-old female patient currently in isolation. Contact tracing efforts are underway to identify potential close contacts.

In an effort to safeguard public health, Mayor Mercado reinstated the mandatory use of face masks, physical distancing, and basic health protocols in the city. Mercado encouraged residents to stay informed about the virus and take appropriate precautions.

Although typically mild, mpox is a contagious disease that requires prompt isolation and medical attention. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends supportive care for symptoms such as pain and fever, while emphasizing nutrition, hydration, skin care, prevention of secondary infections, and treatment of co-infections, including HIV where present.

The Department of Health (DOH) in Eastern Visayas has yet to confirm any mpox cases in the region as of May 29, 2025, based on a report from the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU). The DOH reminded the public to remain informed about accurate information regarding mpox to prevent misinformation.

Mpox, caused by the monkeypox virus, presents symptoms akin to smallpox, including rashes that resemble blisters or pimples, fever, headaches, body aches, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes.

Public safety measures advised by health authorities include frequent and proper hand washing, sanitizing objects frequently, and wearing long sleeves, pants, and a face mask in public places. Anyone experiencing symptoms of mpox is urged to seek immediate medical consultations at the nearest health center.
