NICE Launches Major Consultation on Streamlining HealthTech Appraisals

NICE, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, has launched a significant consultation on proposed updates to its PMG36 manual. The changes aim to streamline technology appraisals for HealthTech, including medical devices, diagnostics, and digital technologies, without affecting how medicines are assessed. The consultation is open until 5pm on 22 October 2025 and can be accessed via the NICE consultation on PMG36 updates.

The proposed revisions to the PMG36 manual are set to provide processes and methods better suited to the unique characteristics of the HealthTech landscape. This move is seen as a step towards enabling the UK's health system to properly evaluate and adopt innovative technologies at pace. For developers and providers, the changes could mean clearer pathways for bringing new solutions to market and greater confidence in how evidence will be assessed. Chris Whitehouse, a political consultant and expert on medical technology policy and regulation, reports on the new consultation.

NICE works with a variety of stakeholders, including medical professionals, researchers, and industry representatives, to develop and update guidelines. Specialised consultancy firms, industry associations, and regulatory affairs experts can also provide support and guidance to MedTech companies navigating NICE processes.

The NICE consultation on PMG36 updates is a significant opportunity for the MedTech sector to engage and shape the future of HealthTech appraisal in the UK. The revised PMG36 manual promises processes and methods tailored to the unique characteristics of the HealthTech landscape, potentially facilitating the adoption of innovative technologies at pace.
