In a unique and valuable training initiative, the "Trainees Lead a Ward" project has been successfully implemented at City Hospital Solingen for the second time. The project, which takes place on an infectious diseases/gastroenterology ward, prepares young care professionals for the challenges of everyday work, including possible leadership tasks.

The project spans over a period of 14 days, consisting of a week of theoretical preparation followed by 13 days of practical work. Seven young trainees were given the responsibility to manage routine ward activities and handle emergencies, providing them with hands-on experience in managing nursing and care teams, patient flow, and unexpected challenges.

During the project, the trainees demonstrated their ability to apply theoretical knowledge in practice, while also developing crucial skills in leadership, time management, prioritization, and problem-solving. They were responsible for writing their own duty schedules, self-organizing their ward management, and cooperating with medical visits, social services, and physiotherapists.

The project is considered extremely important as it prepares trainees for taking responsibility and managing independently. To ensure the trainees had the necessary support, practice instructors were available for consultation during early and late shifts. Despite the closure of the St. Lukas Clinic last year, the project continues at the hospital.

They also have the opportunity to accelerate their career progression by demonstrating readiness for increased responsibility.
