NYPD probing incident at Bronx childcare facility where 20-month-old succumbs to drowning
In the Castle Hill neighbourhood of the Bronx, authorities are investigating the accidental drowning of a 20-month-old girl, River Edima Wilson, at Ana's Butterfly Garden Family Group daycare centre.
The incident occurred on Friday, with River found unconscious and unresponsive at the dollar store daycare centre. According to officials, the child climbed onto the deck and into the above-ground pool in the backyard.
The day care operator, who was cooking food at the time, told police that the toddler managed to get out of the house through the back screen door. The operator hasn't immediately returned a call seeking comment.
The death appears accidental, but authorities are still investigating. Officials with the state's Office of Children and Family Services and the city's health department are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.
As of midday Tuesday, the Wilson family had raised more than $5,100 on GoFundMe, with the fundraising appeal describing River as 'a beautiful, joyful baby - full of wonder, light, and laughter.' River's radiant smile is said to have 'lit up every room.'
State records indicate that Ana's Butterfly Garden Family Group was inspected four times over the last year and cited with no violations. However, there are no available search results providing information on why the operator of the daycare hasn't yet been identified or on how often the facility has been inspected and cited in the past 12 months.
Police are also investigating the incident, and the community is left in shock and grief. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and safety, especially in dollar store daycare settings.
Our thoughts are with the Wilson family during this difficult time.
