Office Disputes between Age Groups
In a recent report by DAK health, titled "Gen Z in the world of work", it's revealed that the work atmosphere and good relationships with colleagues hold significant importance for Gen Z employees in the German state of Hesse. This finding surpasses the importance that Gen Z places on good pay and work-life balance.
The report, which analysed data from around 262,000 DAK-insured employees in Hesse, also highlighted that nearly a quarter (23%) of all employees experience tensions between different age groups in their daily work life. Among Gen Z employees (born between 1995 and 2010), this percentage rises to 20%.
Britta Dalhoff, head of DAK health in Hesse, suggests that mixed-age teams can help break down prejudices and create understanding among employees. The report, which was evaluated by the Berlin-based IGES institute, also proposes mixed-age teams as a solution to improve the work environment and reduce generational conflicts.
The report, which also included a survey of around 1,000 working individuals aged 18 to 65 years by the Forsa institute, showed that good pay is important for 61% of Gen Z employees, while work-life balance is important for 54%.
Interestingly, the sick leave rate for employees under 30 in Hesse is 4.9%, which is lower than the average of all DAK-insured employees (5.6%). Although younger employees are more likely to be absent due to illness, they tend to be absent for shorter periods.
To improve cooperation between young and older employees, employers in Hesse can implement measures such as organizing professionally planned team-building events, fostering environments outside the usual workplace, and supporting both professional and social skill development in mixed-age teams. Employers are also encouraged to prioritize the health of all employees by fostering a healthy work environment.
In conclusion, the report underscores the importance of a good work atmosphere and good relationships with colleagues for Gen Z employees in Hesse, Germany. Employers are encouraged to consider these findings and take steps to create a more inclusive and harmonious work environment for all employees.
