Park University Set to Display Unique Art Showcase Titled "Vision Quest"
Art Exhibit: "Vision Quest: A Journey of Seeing" by Nancy Tilson-Mallett
The Campanella Gallery at Park University is set to open its 2022-23 season with an intriguing art exhibit titled "Vision Quest: A Journey of Seeing." This exhibit, showcasing the works of retired academic physician and fine artist, Nancy Tilson-Mallett, will take place at the University of Missouri-Kansas City's School of Medicine, although Tilson-Mallett retired from there in 2019.
Tilson-Mallett's artwork in the exhibit is an interpretation of her diagnostic studies related to glaucoma, a group of eye diseases that can cause vision loss and blindness by damaging the optic nerve. Most of her works are silk paintings or complex cloth with embellishments of embroidery, felting, and beading, reflecting her passion for nature, color, and patterns, combined with biology and medicine.
The exhibit is a personal journey of the artist's experience with glaucoma, as she was diagnosed with the condition at the age of 45. Tilson-Mallett, who was board certified in internal medicine and hospice and palliative care, lives in the Hyde Park area of Kansas City, Mo.
Tilson-Mallett is also an adjunct instructor in the Department of Medical Humanities and Bioethics within UMKC's medical school. An artist reception will be held on Saturday, Aug. 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Gallery. Admission to the Gallery is free.
The Campanella Gallery will be open during the exhibit's duration, which is from Monday, Aug. 8, through Friday, Oct. 28. The Gallery's regular business hours during the exhibit are as follows:
- Monday, Aug. 8, through Sunday, Aug. 14 (Summer Break)
- Saturday, Oct. 8, through Sunday, Oct. 16 (Fall Break)
