Hadassah Medical Center, a leading Israeli hospital, has reported an incident involving 11 patients who developed eye infections after receiving intravitreal injections of Avastin (Bevacizumab), a common treatment for retinal diseases.

The hospital is actively managing the situation with immediate treatment for affected patients, close medical monitoring, and regular communication with patients about possible symptoms of inflammation. They are also collaborating with the Ministry of Health's Infection Prevention Unit for ongoing medical oversight.

Avastin, an anti-cancer biological treatment, is routinely administered via intravitreal injection at Hadassah Medical Center for patients with retinal diseases. The treatment aims to prevent vision deterioration by inhibiting the tumors' ability to create blood vessels (angiogenesis).

In response to the incident, Hadassah Medical Center is contacting relevant patients who received the injection recently, providing them with information about possible symptoms of inflammation, and instructing them to come for immediate examination at Hadassah's clinic if symptoms appear.

Several other patients are also receiving preventive treatment to avoid inflammation related to the eye infection incident.

It is important to note that the search results do not specify the exact cause of these infections. The hospital has reported the incident to the Ministry of Health, but no detailed information on whether the infections were caused by contamination, procedural breaches, or other factors has been disclosed.

Hadassah Medical Center performs over 20,000 intravitreal injections annually as part of advanced treatment for various eye diseases. The hospital's commitment to patient care and safety remains unwavering, and they continue to provide the highest level of medical care to their patients.
