Father Jim Halstead, a veteran priesthood servant of 49 years, will be the recipient of a special message from Pope Leo XIV at the 2025 Les Turner ALS Walk for Life. The event, organised by the Les Turner ALS Foundation, will take place at Soldier Field on an unspecified date.

Father Halstead, who has spent a significant part of his life creating community, is one of the individuals supported by the foundation. Diagnosed with ALS, he has officiated hundreds of marriages and funerals during his service.

Michelle Shaker, a clinical social worker with the Les Turner ALS Foundation, believes the Pope's message will bring people together and create a joyous day. The message, approximately 5-and-a-half minutes long, is expected to focus on hope and community.

In July, Father Halstead emailed Pope Leo (formerly Father Bob Prevost), requesting a message for the Les Turner ALS Walk for Life. Pope Leo agreed to deliver a message, and on September 20, 2025, he will share his thoughts during the walk.

The funds raised during the walk will be used for care and research in the fight against ALS. The Pope's message at the event is expected to emphasise love, hope, and compassion, emphasising that love conquers death and offering solidarity to those affected by ALS. It will also honour the memory of Les Turner, the foundation's namesake, and encourage the community's commitment to finding a world free of ALS.

Throughout his career, Father Halstead has expressed his appreciation for the show of goodness and care at events such as this, especially considering the current state of the country. His service in the priesthood and his work with the Les Turner ALS Foundation serve as a testament to his dedication to creating a community of hope and support.
