Pregnancy Heartburn: Causes, Symptoms, and Safe Management

Heartburn, a common complaint among pregnant women, particularly in the third trimester, is a burning sensation in the chest caused by stomach acid flowing back into the esophagus. While antacids offer quick relief, long-term use of over-the-counter medications requires medical consultation due to potential side effects.

Heartburn symptoms can last from a few minutes to a couple of hours, varying based on the cause and treatment. Risk factors include hiatal hernias, pregnancy, smoking, obesity, and certain medications. Lifestyle adjustments such as avoiding trigger foods, wearing loose clothing, and waiting a few hours after eating before lying down can help manage occasional heartburn.

Frequent heartburn may indicate gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a more serious condition that may require prescription medication or surgery. Smoking increases the risk of developing GERD, but quitting can reduce heartburn symptoms. Weight loss can also help reduce GERD symptoms in people with obesity.

Heartburn is a common issue, especially during pregnancy, but it's important to manage symptoms wisely. While antacids provide short-term relief, long-term use of over-the-counter medications should be discussed with a healthcare provider. Lifestyle changes and quitting smoking can also help alleviate heartburn symptoms.
