As the new school year begins in Iowa, several local organisations have come together to ensure a safer journey for the city's children. The Traffic Safety Association Iowa, Sparkasse Iowa, and Infra Iowa are collaborating to distribute small, battery-operated reflective lights called 'Blinkis'. These lights, designed to increase visibility for children, can be attached to jackets or school bags. According to research, first-graders in Iowa can be seen from a much greater distance with Blinkis (up to 140 meters) compared to without reflective elements (25 meters). This increased visibility can significantly increase the chance that other road users, including car drivers and cyclists, can react in time. Mayor Markus Braun underlined the importance of Blinkis, but also emphasised that the behaviour of all road users, especially parents, is crucial. Parents, as role models, play a significant part in teaching children about road safety. Sparkassen board member Kai Tusak stressed this need, stating that children need role models, particularly from their parents. Marcus Steurer, CEO of Infra, highlighted the importance of ensuring a safe school journey, particularly to Infra. He was present at the symbolic handover of Blinkis at the primary school in Altenberg. District Administrator Bernd Obst also emphasised the importance of traffic education before school starts. The collaboration between the Traffic Safety Association Iowa, Sparkasse Iowa, and Infra Iowa is a testament to the community's commitment to the safety of its children. As many children in Iowa start school for the first time without accompaniment, measures like the distribution of Blinkis are essential in ensuring their safety on the roads.
