### Domestic Violence Action Day in Germany Highlights Urgent Need for Change

On Saturday, November 30, SPD Women Oberhausen held an action against violence against women in Sterkrade - Mitte, as part of Terre des Femmes' Action Day Against Violence Against Women. The event, themed "When the Violence Doesn't Stop," was supported by the Zonta Club Oberhausen with their "No to Violence Against Women" bench.

The action day aimed to raise awareness about the ongoing issue of domestic violence in Germany, particularly focusing on its impact on women. The United Nations declared November 25 as the International Action and Remembrance Day against Violence Against Women in 1960, and this year's theme echoed the same sentiment: "Live Free Without Violence."

At the action, information booths provided resources on the topic of "Domestic Violence." Bags containing information materials were distributed to women, offering them valuable resources and support.

Terre des Femmes, a German women's rights organization, has been at the forefront of advocating for comprehensive measures to combat violence against women. They demand a comprehensive concept that includes a legal claim to assistance for victims of violence and mandatory anti-violence programs for perpetrators.

The organization's efforts extend to lobbying for improved legal protection, education programs, and support for shelters and counseling services. They also engage in awareness campaigns to promote healthy relationships and raise awareness about the prevalence of domestic violence, particularly in instances of partner violence that often continues even after separation, particularly affecting mothers who experience violence from their former partners.

Recent studies highlight the prevalence of intimate partner violence in Germany. Nearly one in five mothers in Germany experience intimate partner violence during separation[1]. Given the growing number of women seeking help, the city needs a women's shelter with sufficient capacity. According to the BKA, the number of affected women increased by five percent last year[2].

The women of the local branch have also demanded financial and personnel support for the Oberhausen women's shelter. The message for the day was clear: "Live Free Without Violence." As efforts continue to combat domestic violence in Germany, organizations like Terre des Femmes play a crucial role in advocating for victims and pushing for systemic changes.

Science can play a significant role in understanding the root causes and effects of domestic violence on women's health-and-wellness, particularly mental-health and women's health. To address the growing number of women seeking help and the increase in incidents, there's a need for comprehensive research and evidence-based solutions to support victims and modify perpetrator behavior.
