In the heart of Düsseldorf, the issue of bike lane markings on Schadowstraße has been a topic of ongoing discussion. The city has announced that a decision regarding the marking will be made by the end of September, aiming to enhance safety and separate pedestrians and cyclists.

For daily cyclist Markus Riedel, the need for change is evident. He has observed numerous near-collisions due to pedestrians not paying attention to bike traffic on the redesigned shopping mile, which houses the bike lanes. Unfortunately, the road marking paint did not last a few months, necessitating repainting by the city.

The city is testing different marking colours and materials for the bike lanes on Schadowstraße to find the most durable variant. However, the architects who redesigned Schadowstraße have so far rejected a colourful marking. The nearby bike street Am Wehrhahn, with its clearly separated bike and pedestrian path and distinct, colourful marking, serves as a potential source of inspiration.

Yet, it cannot be a blueprint for Schadowstraße due to copyright reasons. The city has not yet commented on the costs of the new marking attempt, and the Federation of Taxpayers is sharply criticizing the city's approach for going into a test phase after a failed attempt.

The bike lanes on Schadowstraße were marked again due to severe peeling, a problem that occurred five months ago when the white stripes were first applied. The city of Düsseldorf has been trying for years to ensure more safety for cyclists on Schadowstraße with signs and pictograms, but the effectiveness of these measures has been questioned.

As the city moves forward with its plans, it remains to be seen which marking solution will be chosen and whether it will finally provide the safety and separation needed for both pedestrians and cyclists on Schadowstraße.
