Psychologist's Guidance for Child's Pre-Camp Preparation
Preparing Children for Their First Sejour Away from Home
For children embarking on their first experience away from home, such as a summer camp or school trip, psychological preparation is key. According to RIA Novosti's child psychologist Natalia Naumova, a child's intent to attend is critical.
"It's essential to address any fears or anxieties/Concerns that may arise, which can include separation issues," Naumova explained. "If these cannot be tackled alone, involve a psychologist to identify the root cause hindering the child's willingness to leave and exhibit independence."
The child should be made to feel they have a choice and not be forced or persuaded into attending, Naumova stated.
Addressing Uncertainties around Unclaimed Playgrounds
In regards to public playgrounds without explicit ownership, residents have been given advice on what to do when disputes arise. The guidelines encourage nearby residents/Neighbors to work collaboratively to maintain the play area for community benefit.
By addressing fears and anxieties, allowing the child some control in choosing to attend, and implementing coping strategies, children will feel more confident and prepared for their new adventure away from home.
Strategies to aid in this psychological preparation include:
- Acknowledging and validating the child's feelings. Share personal experiences to alleviate feelings of isolation/Loneliness.
- Gradually preparing the child through sleepovers with friends or relatives and simulating the camp environment at home.
- Developing coping mechanisms together, such as creating a personalized comfort kit and practicing "what if" scenarios.
- Encouraging independence by helping the child manage simple routines and packing personal belongings.
- Allowing the child to bring a favorite comfort item/object for reassurance in unfamiliar surroundings.
By employing these methods, parents can help their children feel more prepared and confident when venturing out for the first time.
"Incorporating science-backed strategies such as acknowledging and validating a child's feelings, and developing coping mechanisms, can positively impact a child's mental health during their first journey away from home."
"In the context of unclaimed playgrounds, promoting health-and-wellness can also be observed, as neighbors collaborating to maintain these areas for community benefit fosters a sense of unity and collective responsibility, which is beneficial for the mental health of the community members."
