Regulation for the Protection of Cats in Großostheim

The District Office (Landratsamt) of the Aschaffenburg district has announced that it will be implementing a cat protection regulation in the market town of Großostheim, effective from March 1, 2026, following a six-month preparation period.

The regulation aims to control the number of stray cats and prevent their suffering. It requires cat owners to register and identify their free-roaming cats by ear tattooing or microchipping. Only sterilized cats will be allowed to roam freely if they are not or no longer capable of reproduction.

The need for this regulation was demonstrated by Großostheim, and the district office has the authority to issue such a regulation if there is significant suffering of stray and feral cats in a certain area. The regulation initially applies only to the area of the market town of Großostheim.

The creation of the cat protection regulation involved numerous parties, including the Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection, and the market town of Großostheim itself was one of the parties involved in assessing the specific need for the regulation on site.

The district office has the option to sterilize free-roaming cats without registration and identification, as outlined in the cat protection regulation. If a need is demonstrated in another municipality, the protection regulation can be extended accordingly.

The cat protection regulation will be reviewed comprehensively three years after it comes into effect. The review will determine whether it has effectively contributed to the protection of cats and if any adjustments are necessary.

This move is part of a broader effort to improve the welfare of stray and feral cats in the region, and it is hoped that the regulation will help reduce the number of unwanted litters and alleviate the suffering of these animals.
