University of Rochester Medical Center Establishes New Respiratory Pathogens Research Center
The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) has announced the creation of the Respiratory Pathogens Research Center, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at advancing our understanding of respiratory viruses and their impact on various populations. The center, led by microbiologist David Topham, Ph.D., an influenza researcher, will focus on dissecting immune responses to viruses like Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and human metapneumovirus (HMPV), with a particular emphasis on vulnerable groups such as older adults, immunocompromised individuals, and premature infants.
The center's research will employ advanced methodologies, including real-time PCR for virus detection, viral serologic analysis for immune response characterization, and sophisticated immunological and genomic techniques to study the effects of infections and environmental factors on lung development and immune function. Key faculty members, such as Dr. Gloria Pryhuber and Dr. Brenda L. Tesini, will contribute their expertise on immune responses and lung inflammation.
The center has secured significant collaborations and funding, including a partnership with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), which supports research on environmental factors affecting respiratory health and aims to translate findings into disease prevention and improved health outcomes. The center's potential projects include studies on an experimental vaccine for pneumonia in the elderly, interactions between germs in the body, RSV infections in children, flu vaccines for organ transplant patients, premature infants, and co-infections of viruses and bacteria. The center's research could have far-reaching implications, given that approximately 65 million people in the United States visit doctors or emergency rooms each year with symptoms from respiratory infections, and roughly 2 million children and 4 million people die worldwide each year from acute respiratory infections.
The center's work is supported by a $4.7 million grant from the Federal government and a seven-year agreement with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), which could potentially provide up to $50 million in funding over the agreement's duration. In addition, computational informatics scientist Richard Scheuermann, Ph.D., from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, will also contribute to the center's research efforts.
